 Ethics of Nanotechnology:

(I:Eth:1)

Pros:

  • Nanotechnology could have the ability to revolutionize many electronic products, procedures, and applications.  (Eth:1)

  • "The development of more effective energy-producing, energy-absorbing, and energy storage products in smaller and more efficient devices is possible with this technology. Such items like batteries, fuel cells, and solar cells can be built smaller but can be made to be more effective with this technology." (Eth:1)

  • The manufacturing sector that will need materials like "nanotubes, aerogels, nano particles, and other similar items to produce their products with. These materials are often stronger, more durable, and lighter than those that are not produced with the help of nanotechnology." (Eth:1)

  • In the medical world, "smart drugs" can help cure people faster and without the side effects that other traditional drugs have. "You will also find that the research of nanotechnology in medicine is now focusing on areas like tissue regeneration, bone repair, immunity and even cures for such ailments like cancer, diabetes, and other life threatening diseases." (Eth:1)

  • This technology will enable to create stronger, lighter, cheaper, and better materials/products.  We will be able to  use recycling to a whole new level by taking garbage and reusing it to creatr newer and better items. (Eth:2)

  • Eventually, this technology would be able to stop disease internally, slow down the aging process and maybe even remove harmful materials from the air we breathe to extend our lifetimes. (Eth:2)

(I:Eth:3)

  • "We will no longer need to destroy the environment around us at an alarming rate. We can use left over and unused scraps of things we have already used up. These nanorobots will be able to create anything without ever destroying another forest or buying oil from foreign countries." (Eth:2)

Cons:

  • Possible loss of jobs in the farming and manufacturing industry (Eth:1)

  • Could bring about the crash of certain markets such as oil and diamonds due to the possibility of developing alternative sources of energy. Diamonds would lose its value it would be able to be mass produced (Eth:1)

  • "Atomic weapons can now be more accessible and made to be more powerful and more destructive." (Eth:1)

 (I:Eth:2)

  • Problems can actually arise from the inhalation of these nano particles. (Eth:1)

  • Very expensive and difficult to manufacture, which is probably why products made with nanotechnology could be more expensive (Eth:1)

  • These nanorobots could fall into the wrong hands and be used against us instead of for us (Eth:2)

  • "The use of these robots in the hands of "good people" are used for the advancement of our race and not for individual gain." (Eth:2)

  • Rules need to be created in order to keep ideas/products from getting out of hand. Some people believe that this new technology won't be able to be controlled by regulations and constrictions (Eth:2)
